Background

Organizational Context

The Emergency Operations and Information Management (EOIM) team works collaboratively with Geneva, Regional and Country level counterparts to:

i) manage an inclusive local-to-global IFRC wide response system, built upon Movement learning, informed by industry best practices, and equipped for the future; ii) deliver innovation in managing information – more timely and comprehensive data collation and analysis for IFRC operational and strategic decision making; iii) ensure evidence based analysis of risks and capacities that supports better preparedness and more integrated, multi-sectoral, holistic approaches to response and recovery; iv) profile the work of the IFRC across the preparedness – response – recovery continuum – highlighting the value added of the IFRC for strengthening resilience; v) expand DREF access to more of the most vulnerable communities and in response to the many small, silent and forgotten disasters; vi) deliver more transparency in procedures and in decision making including through clear agreed SOPs; and vii) instil an IM culture in the IFRC – disseminating why information is needed, how it is used and the value of unique RCRC data and analysis.

Job Purpose

The purpose of the intern is to support the EOIM team including but not limited to provide relevant technical information and reliable service to the GO team through supporting the development and maintenance of information management and data collection, collation and analysis.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

The IFRC is looking for an intern that will support the EOIM team responsible for the establishement of the GO platform. The key tasks of the intern will be:

  • Provide technical advice to the GO project team and network on matters including but not limited to Information management practices related to data collection, collation, analysis and dissemination for programmes and operations
  • Provide connections within the IM network that may be useful to the GO project.
  • Provide comments and inputs on any documents shared by the EOIM team.
  • Represent and support the EOC team on internal and external meetings and presentations.
  • Identify and track the enhancements and needs for the GO lab and related final products.
  • Propose data visualizations using web technologies.
  • Technical support for Operations Room and Joint Task Force activation
  • Propose new solutions for improving data management in the DCPRR and others departments
  • Scraping and collation of datasets realted to emergency operations, both single0- and multi context environments.
  • Support data entry and processing when required

The intern will report to the Lead Information Management whitin the Emergency Operations and Information Management unit whitin the Disaster and Crisis Prevention, Response and Recovery Department in Geneva.

Education

Applicants for internship positions must be currently enrolled in a university or equivalent level, or have graduated recently in an area that is compatible with the IFRC activities.

Experience

Required:

  • Demonstrated experience in data collection, analysis and processing of complex data.
  • Experience with databases, creation of datasets, data entry, and aggregation of data.
  • Experience with Red Cross Red Crescent Movement

Knowledge, skills and languages

Required:

  • Knowledge of online mapping tools, data visualization & dashboards is nice to have (e.g. cartodb, mapbox, esri, Tableau, integrated dashboard)
  • Knowledge and understanding of disaster information management issues

Preferred:

  • Knowledge of IFRC information management tools and IFRC data sources Competencies and values

Comments

The basic internship is intended for young people pursuing university level education to gain work experience in the area of their education.

The basic intern must meet the following criteria: Be currently-enrolled in a university or equivalent level, or have graduated within 1 year from the date of hiring in an area that is compatible with the IFRC activities.

Remuneration:

A daily allowance of CHF 75.00 is paid to basic interns for each day worked at the IFRC at the end of each month. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation, insurance and living expenses are the sole responsibility of interns themselves.
