JOB PURPOSE
The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) Americas region requires a Communications in Emergency to support its response to the migration situation in the region. Priority contexts include Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Brazil, Trinidad and Tobago and Guyana. The list of priority contexts will increase as the migratory trail expands to other countries in the Americas.
The role requires extensive travel, a flexible attitude, team-oriented approach, and the ability to deliver quality product under pressure.
The Communications in Emergency Senior Officer reports to the Operations Manager.
JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Key responsibilities of the Emergency Communications Senior Officer are:
Work with National Societies in-country to support their communications response and generate content for use across the global IFRC network, in particular:
Reactive and proactive domestic and international media relations
Writing and updating regularly key messages, facts and figures, and reactive lines
Generating web stories, blogs, still photos with captions and videos
Drafting press releases, statements and other materials as required
Promoting the response on social media and generating Twitter, Instagram and Facebook posts for IFRC platforms
Supporting National Societies in the coordination of activities and advocacy messages to sensitize the public, media, donors and governments on the emergency situation, humanitarian needs and Red Cross/Red Crescent response (independent response and with IFRC supported DREF/emergency appeal response)
Act as a spokesperson on behalf of IFRC emergency migration operations
Produce/assist in the production of information bulletins and marketing tools to support emergency appeals and other promotional requirements
Provide support to resource mobilization and humanitarian diplomacy in emergencies as required
Create public communications campaigns in key topics as: anti-stigma, social inclusion, integration, among others.
Coordinate communications efforts with other components of the Movement that are part of the response, and with other humanitarian organizations and government agencies involved.
Support de CEA delegate in the productions of messages, materials and campaigns designed to satisfy information needs of the communities.
Capacity building of Red Cross National Societies in communication.
EDUCATION
University degree in journalism, communications, marketing or international policies.
EXPERIENCE
- At least 3 years of experience working as journalist/press officer and/or Communications/Policy Officer.
- Experience in managing communications issues in complex and delicate situations.
- Experience in building media contacts.
- Experience in design and implementing communication and advocacy campaigns
- Red Cross or Red Crescent experience in supporting emergency response.
- Solid experience in media relations and acting as a spokesperson.
- Excellent research and writing and skills.
- Experience in managing and developing advocacy messages and products
SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE
- Knowledge of humanitarian affairs.
- Ability to negotiate with varying partners.
- Ability to multi task and work under pressure.
- Good analytical skills.
- Knowledge of social media and related trends.
LANGUAGES
- Fluently spoken and written Spanish
- Fluently spoken and written English
- Good command of another IFRC official language (i.e., French) or a language spoken in the country of mission (i.e., Portuguese), preferred.
