Switzerland: Consultancy, Development of training modules for youth and volunteers on environmental protection

Organizational context

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) is the world's largest humanitarian network, reaching 150 million people each year through its 187 member National Societies. The Organisation acts before, during and after disasters and health emergences in order to meet the needs and improve the lives of vulnerable people. Our work is guided by seven fundamental principles (humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, voluntary service, unity and universality) and by Strategy 2020, which voices our collective vision and determination to move forward in tackling the major challenges that confront humanity in the present decade. Further to this, in 2015-2020 there are 8 Areas of Focus for IFRC support to its membership, including DRR, Shelter, Livelihoods, Health, WASH, Social Inclusion, Cultures of Non-Violence and Peace, and Migration. These interlinking priorities will be rolled our through yearly Operational Plans linked back to Strategy 2020 outcomes. This consultancy relates to the priority area of the strategic aim 2: healthy and safe living, by encouraging a greater adoption of environmentally sustainable living.

More specifically, it will contribute to the implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding signed between Iranian Red Crescent Society and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies in December 2014 concerning “Youth and volunteers, the pioneers of Environmental Protection”. Iranian Red Crescent Society has built a strong experience in conducting training for youth, and ensuring sustained commitment and engagement of volunteers, the project will focus on environmental awareness-raising**.**

Job purpose

The purpose of this consultancy is to contribute to the protection of the environment by empowering and using the capacity of youth and volunteers within the Red Cross Red Crescent Network.

This consultancy will drive forward the IFRC’s approach to promote environmental protection to address vulnerability in the short and, especially, long term and thereby strengthen resilience of vulnerable communities.

This consultancy will assist the Risk and Vulnerability Department of the IFRC and the Iranian Red Crescent Society by developing and piloting a new set of training modules for youth and volunteers on environmental protection in 2017 in Iran. The module will be developed to be piloted in Iran, but with the aim for it to be easily adapted to suit different country contexts.

Job duties and responsibilities

In close collaboration with the IFRC risk and vulnerability team, the consultant will:

  • Conduct a mapping and analysis exercise of the relevant materials and resources already existing within the Red Cross Red Crescent network and with other organisations focused on youth engagement and/or environmental protection
  • Develop a proposed outline for a new training module on environmental protection specifically designed for youth and volunteers based on the existing materials
  • Facilitate an initial technical consultation workshop in Iran in March whereby suggestions will be solicited on the structure and outline of the training.
  • Prepare the detailed content of the training modules in collaboration with IRCS and IFRC
  • Facilitate the sharing of international experiences in the development of the training
  • Organize an initial Training of Trainers for trainers conducting the formation and strengthen the module with trainer’s feedback
  • Provide ongoing support to the pilot trainings and the trainers
  • Review the outcome of the pilot trainings, and identify revisions that could be made to improve
  • Support the finalisation of a set of global training modules that can be adapted to different country contexts

All consultants must sign the Staff Code of Conduct and IFRC Child Protection Policy.

Duties applicable to all staff

  • Actively work towards the achievement of the Federation Secretariat’s goals
  • Abide by and work in accordance with the Red Cross and Red Crescent principles and policies (IFRC Code of Conduct and Child Protection Policy)
  • Perform any other work related duties and responsibilities that may be assigned by the line manager
  • Support and promote a workplace culture that is non-discriminatory, and gender-and-diversity sensitive

Education

  • Master’s degree or equivalent in environmental sciences, education, development, international studies, or related field

Experience

Required:

  • Substantial experience in educational programme design and implementation
  • Substantial experience awareness-rising in environmental protection or climate change, or environmental education
  • Substantial experience in organizing and planning trainings
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver educational, creative, and entertaining presentations or sessions to a variety of audiences of all ages
  • Experience working with volunteers and youth
  • Demonstrated experience delivering well edited research documents, trainings and educational material

Preferred:

  • Experience with and understanding of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement

Knowledge and Skills

Required:

  • Awareness of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Strategy 2020 and IFRC sustainability approach; and its operational plan
  • The ability to communicate effectively and sensitively with people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds;
  • Ability to build effective partnerships and maintain working relationships within the organisation and with external partners
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to gather, analyse, and evaluate facts and prepare and present concise oral and written reports for internal and external audiences
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to explain complex issues to youth and volunteers.
  • Ability to work independently, good independent judgment, discretion, and initiative.
  • Fluent in spoken and written English

Preferred:

Knowledge of spoken and written Persian
