Background
The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) is the world's largest humanitarian organization, with 190 member National Societies. As part of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, our work is guided by seven fundamental principles; humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, voluntary service, unity and universality.
Organizational Context
The Global Road Safety Partnership (www.grsproadsafety.org) is a hosted programme of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC). The Global Road Safety Partnership’s mission is to reduce death and serious injuries as a result of road crashes in low- and middle-income countries. According to the World Health Organization, road traffic injuries claim more than 1.2 million lives each year and tremendously affect health and development in low- and middle-income countries. In fact, road traffic deaths are the leading cause of death among people aged between 15 and 29 years and cost governments approximately 3% of GDP. Road Traffic injuries and deaths represent a manmade, humanitarian crisis and GRSP/IFRC are committed to evidence-based interventions to address this crisis. Under the Bloomberg Initiative for Global Road Safety (BIGRS), the Global Road Safety Partnership is supported by Bloomberg Philanthropies to support efforts to advocate for evidence-based policies (legislation, regulations, standards, rules) designed to reduce road traffic injuries and deaths in a number of low- and middle- income countries. GRSP does this through the provision of funding and road safety and advocacy technical support to local civil society organizations and Red Cross Red Crescent National Societies. The Global Advocacy & Grants Programme develops and oversees national level policy advocacy campaigns in coordination with partners on-the-ground which, if effectively implemented, have been proven to save lives and prevent serious injury on the roads. The Global Advocacy & Grants Programme team is a small and dynamic group of public health and road safety policy advocates with experience designing, organizing, and managing national level policy advocacy campaigns around the world. In addition to our team, we work closely with the Bloomberg Advocacy Incubator, a global public health advocacy organization comprised of the US-based Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kid and UK-based Consumers International.
