IFRC is served by a Secretariat based in Geneva, with regional and country offices throughout the world. The Secretariat's headquarters is organized as three main business groups: Partnerships, Programmes and Operations, and Management Services. The Policy, Strategy, and Knowledge department is part of IFRC's Partnerships divisions. The department consists of six teams, including Policy and Diplomacy Unit. The Policy Intern will report to the Manager of the Policy and Diplomacy Unit.
Job Purpose
The Policy intern will support the Policy and Diplomacy Unit to ensure a strategic, coordinated, consultative and results-based approach to the IFRC's policy and positioning, internally and externally. The internship will be primarily focused on the IFRC's work related to the "localization of aid" which refers to support for greater investment in local and national responders to humanitarian emergencies, and an improved approach to coordination and partnership between international and local actors. The IFRC is co-convener of an ongoing initiative involving major donors and humanitarian agencies (from the UN, NGOs, and the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement) related to the "Grand Bargain" concluded at the World Humanitarian Summit in 2016. The intern will support a number of projects related to this "workstrearn" of the Grand Bargain.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
The policy intern will primarily work in support of the IFRC's work on localization of aid. In support of a Senior Officer for Localization, the intern will assist with:
- developing and maintaining a humanitarian sector wide online platform for localization
- organization of global localization workstream meetings, inter-agency missions and field pilots, including conceptual development, communications and administrative issues research on issues related to localization in the areas of financing, partnership, capacity strengthening and coordination.
- communications with current and potential stakeholders in the localization process
The intern will also support other needs of the Policy Unit as needed.
Education
Enrollment or completion in an advanced university degree (master's or equivalent) in international development, law, or related field.
To be eligible for an internship, the candidates must be enrolled or graduated within 1 year
Experience
Work or volunteer experience in a local humanitarian organisation or governmental emergency management position from the global South desirable
Knowledge, skills and languages
- Strong knowledge of the humanitarian sector and its mechanisms and challenges.
- Strong research and communication skills
- Proven good judgment and ability to work with complete integrity and confidentiality.
- Ability to work within a multi-cultural, multilingual, multidisciplinary environment.
- Fluent written and spoken English.
- Familiarity, knowledge, and experience of Islamic thought, culture, and social norms is desirable.
