The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) is the world's largest humanitarian network, reaching 150 million people each year through its 187 member National Societies. We act before, during and after disasters and health emergencies to meet the needs and improve the lives of vulnerable people.
The Secretariat is organised into five decentralised Regional offices (each with several country cluster and country offices reporting to it) covering the globe and responsible for frontline delivery through National Societies, backed by the Geneva headquarters. The Geneva headquarters focuses on setting norms, standards and guidance, ensuring consistency, coordination, and accountability for performance, knowledge sharing, and influential representation with global level partners.
In order to strengthen IFRC’s work to support the development of National Societies, IFRC adopted the 2013 National Society Development Framework. Under the leadership and direction of the Head of National Society Development, Coordination and Support the role contributes to the implementation of this Framework through supporting National Societies in preparing for, during, and after humanitarian emergency response and / or conflict operations.
The National Society Advisor – Organisational Development in Emergencies position will be based in the IFRC Headquarter in Geneva in the Policy, Strategy and Knowledge department. The work will be cross-departmental and closely linked to other ongoing IFRC initiatives related to the work area. The position is supported by Norwegian Red Cross and Swedish Red Cross and you will be on a Norwegian Red Cross contract.
Job purpose: The National Society Advisor – Organisational Development in Emergencies develops and coordinates implementation of conceptual and practical frameworks to better align IFRC humanitarian response and National Society development work, with the goal of improving and / or protecting long-term National Society development outcomes in preparation for and response to humanitarian crisis.
Job duties and responsibilities: •Raise awareness of opportunities for effective OD work at all stages of the disaster and crisis management cycle, including development of technical and functional capacities in both National Societies and IFRC.
•Develop strong relationships with Geneva and regional secretariat, partnering National Societies and ICRC emergency preparedness and response functions, and ensure that NSD considerations become standard practice in Movement responses to emergencies •Work in close coordination with the Disasters & Crisis department, other IFRC support functions and other Movement actors to strengthen IFRC’s approach to ensuring that National Societies are effective emergency responders
•Provide support to National Societies responding to emergencies to ensure that existing development gains are not compromised by relief operations and, where possible, such operations contribute to achieving long-term development goals. This will include short-term deployments to early-stage emergencies as IFRC advisor on NS Development. •Advise Federation leadership on OD aspects of Federation strategy in major or complex emergencies. •Ensure OD in emergencies practice is in line with and contributes to wider IFRC OD knowledge and learning. •Provide on request training to strengthen host National Societies in leading Movement Coordination in emergency settings

Position Requirements:
Education
•Bachelor Academic Degree in social sciences, management, International development, International humanitarian action, Disaster management or other equivalent interdisciplinary education in organizational development and disaster management •Master Academic Degree in relevant area is preferred.
Experience •5 years of work experience in humanitarian or development sector including capacity building is required.
•Experience in the Red Cross Red Crescent Movement is preferred. •Experience in Disaster Management is preferred. •5 years of experience in managing development processes is required.
Knowledge and Skills •Advanced innovative thinking and analytical ability is required. •Expertise in international norms and practices relating to emergency response as well as knowledge of the global humanitarian system is preferred. •Proficient in developing and coordinating networks and coalitions to accomplish goals is required. •Proficient in gaining agreement from partners to support ideas is required. •Proficient in strategy, policy and framework Development is required.
•Proficient in report writing is required.
Languages •Proficient in English including writing skills is required. •Proficient in Arabic, French or Spanish is preferred.
