The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC or “the Federation”) is the world’s largest volunteer-based humanitarian network. The Federation is a membership organisation established by and comprised of its member National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. Along with National Societies and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the Federation is part of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. The overall aim of the IFRC is “to inspire, encourage, facilitate, and promote at all times all forms of humanitarian activities by National Societies with a view to preventing and alleviating human suffering and thereby contributing to the maintenance and promotion of human dignity and peace in the world.” It works to meet the needs and improve the lives of vulnerable people before, during and after disasters, health emergencies and other crises. The Federation is at the forefront of epidemic and humanitarian health response. As part of its ongoing work, several new initiatives have been developed to improve the support to National Societies to detect and respond to public health threats. To support the ongoing improvements in quality and predictability of response a consultant with experience epidemiology and use of technology is required. The consultant is expected to deliver specialised support to the Federation to develop tools and processes to collect, analyse and utilises data in support of emergency health prevention and response activities with a specific focus on support to community based surveillance programs.
Job Purpose
Enable RCRC to be a global leading player in the delivery of public health through improved use of data in public health emergencies and humanitarian crisis.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
Expected outcomes and deliverables
- Support the ongoing development and roll out of Community Based Surveillance activities including field support as required.
- Identify information and data needs of projects or program users and stakeholders with the IFRC health team and provide epidemiology support as required.
- Contribute to providing specific technical support to ensure National Societies can effectively incorporate epidemiological evidence within each stage of the emergency cycle and along the resilience continuum.
- Support the development of tools, guidelines and trainings related to epidemiology in emergency health programming.
- Provide technical support to National Societies implementing Community Based Surivllance
- Support to ongoing mobile data collection activities
Deliverables
- A consultancy report detailing recommendations related to further strategic direction for increased utilisation of epidemiological expertise in public health emergencies and humanitarian crisis with in the Federation
- Field support to at least two operations including mission reports.
Education
- Advanced university degree (master's or equivalent) in Public Health and Epidemiology
Experience
- At least five years’ Humanitarian experience
Knowledge, skills and languages
- English language, additional languages an added benefit.
- Experience with mobile data collection and visualisation software
