Background:
The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) is the world’s largest humanitarian organization, with a network of 192-member National Societies. The overall aim of the IFRC is “to inspire, encourage, facilitate, and promote at all times all forms of humanitarian activities by National Societies with a view to preventing and alleviating human suffering and thereby contributing to the maintenance and promotion of human dignity and peace in the world.” The IFRC works to meet the needs and improve the lives of vulnerable people before, during and after disasters, health emergencies and other crises.
The IFRC is part of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement (Movement), together with its member National Societies and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). The work of the IFRC is guided by the following fundamental principles: humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, voluntary service, unity, and universality.
The IFRC has five regional offices in Africa, Asia Pacific, Middle East and North Africa, Europe, and the Americas. The IFRC also has country cluster delegations and country delegations throughout the world. Together, the Geneva Headquarters and the field structure (regional, cluster and country delegations) comprise the IFRC Secretariat.
At Geneva level the Health and Care Department consists of four teams: Emergency Health, RCCE, WASH and Community Health. This consultancy will support the work of the Community Health Team.
Immunization:
This consultancy will support the work of the Community Health Team related to the COVID-19 vaccination.
The consultancy will support the delivery of the COVID-19 immunization workplan and the Red Cross / Red Crescent Movement 5 Pillar Plan:
1) Advocacy
2) Trust
3) Health
4) Reach
5) Maintain
Consultancy objectives / outputs:
The consultancy will support the roll out of the COVID-19 vaccination workplan with a specific focus on the following areas:
1.Where needed support efforts to get vaccines to countries
- Based on requested from countries support efforts to access COVID-19 vaccines.
- This would include making linkages between countries with excess doses to countries that need doses. In these cases only doses approved for use in the destination country would be considered for donation.
2.Support efforts to get COVID-19 vaccines into arms
- Support the development of country level proposals to get COVID-19 shots into arms with a focus on hard to reach / last mile populations.
3.Support the sharing of better practice / lessons learned
- Support IFRC and National Societies to share better practice / lessons learned related to COVID-19 vaccination and efforts to expand access and increase uptake.
- The sharing of lessons learned can be done via the monthly newsletter, monthly ‘Snapshots’, monthly conference calls and other mechanisms.
4. Proposal development
- Develop project proposals in line with partners’ proposal requirements / template, working with key thematic file-holders, IFRC country and regional offices.
- Develop proposals for the COVAX Humanitarian Buffer
5. Develop of case studies
- Develop case studies to highlight IFRC’s support to COVID-19 vaccination activities at regional, cluster, country level.
